Pregnant women tend to run warmer than non-pregnant women anyway due to the extra blood flow and additional weight they’re carrying. Add summer temperatures to the mix and you’re bound begin fanaticizing about building a summer home on the polar ice caps. Here are a few simple ways expectant moms can stay cool this summer:

    1. Stay hydrated. Carry a water bottle with you at all times and keep drinking throughout the day. There are serious complications associated with dehydration in pregnancy.
    2. Wear sunscreen. Pregnant women are more susceptible to sunburn than non-pregnant women so apply sunscreen 15 to 20 minutes before going outside and every hour or so after that.
    3. Take naps.  It’s ok! You deserve it! You’re growing a baby.
    4. Go for a swim. Not only does swimming cool you off, it helps take some of the pressure off the sciatic nerve. Even ocean swimming is fine; just make sure the waves don't knock you down.
    5. Wear breathable fabrics so you won't sweat; this will keep you cooler and help prevent heat rash that can develop under your breasts and abdomen, a common problem for pregnant women.
    6. Cool down by carrying a water-filled spray bottle with you to mist yourself when you start to feel warm.
    7. Exercise at the cooler times of day and avoid exercising to the point overheating.

A cool, damp washcloth applied to the back of your neck, your forehead, or the top of your head is also a good way to keep your body temperature down.
