Frequently asked questions
Learn more about about our Nutrition Counseling services
Nutrition counseling is an ongoing process where a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist (RD/N) assesses your health goals, dietary habits, and nutritional intake. They provide science-based education (Medical Nutrition Therapy) to help you achieve your individual nutrition goals.
Nutrition counseling provides evidence-based education to improve lifestyle habits, often reducing the need for medications and promoting long-term health. It is a more cost-effective method for managing health compared to traditional medication management alone.
A Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist (RD/N) is a trained nutrition expert with accredited education, national certification, and specialized training in Medical Nutrition Therapy. They cover a range of conditions and may hold specialty credentials like Certified Diabetes Educator, Certified Specialist in Pediatric Nutrition, or Certified Specialist in Sports Nutrition.
Medical Nutrition Therapy is generally covered by Medicare, Medicaid, Select Health, and other commercial insurers. Patients are encouraged to verify coverage with their insurance company using MNT codes 97802 and 97803.
The cost depends on the consultation time and insurance coverage. Typically, a 60-minute session is recommended. We suggest a minimum of three visits for the most effective outcome. Intermountain Healthcare will bill your insurance, but please verify your coverage in advance.
